Collaborating with the Heavenly Accompanist

Updated: Feb 29

The name "Paraclete Collaborative" has been on my mind for years. . .

My initial encounter with the word "paraclete" was probably over 25 years ago while reading Catherine Marshall's book, The Helper. "Paraclete" comes from the Greek word meaning "one called to the side of," and also signifies one who is summoned to aid, convince, convict, exhort, strengthen, comfort, console, mediate, and one who pleads or advocates on another's behalf. In the Bible, it refers to the Holy Spirit and is often translated as Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, or Standby. This gift promised by Jesus and known as the third Person of the Trinity is the conduit for God's power and presence. Yet, the Paraclete does not promote Himself, but in many ways, comes alongside us to reveal and direct all glory and honor to God the Father and Jesus.

Having spent so many years as a collaborative musician, I envision the Holy Spirit as the Heavenly Accompanist! Experiencing the pianist's supportive role of undergirding, coming alongside of, and assisting in giving wings to another's music has helped me to more clearly understand the Paraclete’s role in my own life. I am so grateful for the many opportunities I have had to serve as an accompanist over the years. . . if I played for you, I prayed for you.

Fairly often, the accompanist's name is unintentionally omitted from the printed program, but there is truly no higher compliment from a listener than, "I didn't even notice you were there." Through Paraclete Collaborative, I have the opportunity to become part of a new kind of combined texture. I pray that this musical collaboration with the Paraclete will "come alongside of" your heart so that all you hear is the powerful message.

May all the glory go to God alone!
